I can't tell you how thrilled I am to have caught this beauty. I know alot of guys don't like to reveal the details of their catch, but not me. I'll give it to you straight.
I typically fish with extremely light tackle, and have landed a 10lb rainbow on 2lb test line. But this time we were targeting trophy browns exclusively, so i picked up a Shimano Crucial rod and a Corvalus reel, and spooled up some 20lb line. I was thankful to have had this set up, that is for sure.
On friday morning, we started trolling as soon as we got into our rental boat. I put on my 5" Orginal A.C. Plug in rainbow pattern. About 12:30 or so, the wind started to pick up and it got a bit choppy. We pressed on.
By about 1:30 or so, we were heading in a clockwise direction at the far end of the lake. There is a weed bed there, and we tried to keep the lures just outside the weed line. My friend was driving the boat and I was facing backwards, my lure running on the side furthest from the shore, trying to rip my lure as much as I could.
My friend said he metered some fish, so we were waiting and hoping. Just like clockwork, my rod bent and the fish came right to the surface. I could see it thrashing on the top water, not getting into the air, but just creating lots of white water. I could tell right away that this was a big fish.
Knowing that I had plenty of tackle, my goal was to get that fish into the boat as quickly as possible. It made a couple runs trying to get into the weeds, but i leaved back and pulled hard, directing the fish away from the cover and toward the boat. After a relatively quick struggle, I had the fish next to the boat and my buddy was able to net it on his second try.
We quickly grabbed the digital scale and it was clear the fish was over 10lbs. We immediately headed to the marina to get an official weight. 12lb. 5oz.
