took the boat out on Thursday and fished from noon until about 6p. I trolled Monkey Hole and further down between mm45 and 46. No action, but enjoyed the beautiful weather.
Spent the night in the aux parking lot at Willow and relaunched at 5:30 Friday. Trolled from Willow down to Monkey and again nothing (AC Plugs, Spro, Spro shad pattern, Rapala Shad Raps, cured anchovy, lead head buck tail, etc). Again, nothing but beautiful weather.
Picked up the wife at about noon and continued fishing down further at White Clay Cliffs area. Used every Striper lure top water and with downriggers I could think of. Nada.
On way back up River came upon another boat trying to catch a small plastic pedestal seat boat circling under power with no skipper. We'd seen the same boat several times during the day (my wife watched him launch while waiting for me at Willow). The other boat took a few hits but stopped the small plastic (squared) boat as we approached. Right away recognized this was bad.
First boat confirmed that they did not know where the missing skipper was. Both of us immediately began searching as the sun set. Called on handheld VHF to alert NPS of possible man overboard mayday (no signal). Some time passed and we rendezvoused with the first boat on scene and confirmed neither of us had found anyone. We agreed he'd run full speed to Willow to call it in and we'd cruise the shore with our spotlight (first time I've ever used it). Nothing.
Towed the boat back to the dock, missing skipper's life jacket sitting on the seat. About that time NPS showed up took details and wife and I went back out to search while waiting for NPS boat to arrive. Searched for four hours. Nothing.
NPS showed up, marked the spot where the skipperless boat was found circling and they told us they couldn't do much more until daylight (we had cruised many miles of shoreline looking, so I'm confident even with more NPS searching, which they did, the skipper wasn't on shore).
Have been watching the local news sources and haven't heard a report or outcome. I'd like to continue to hope the skipper found some way to shore and is ok.
I feel terrible if the guy drown. Terrible. It's another terribly tragic accident.
Three years ago I changed my own 'boating culture' and began wearing an inflatable life jacket full time. I hope to never fall in, but I know if I do, there wouldn't be time to put it on, and that's when I would want it most. And, because I have younger relatives that are also fishermen and women, I hope maybe it might help to encourage them as they become adults to wear one as well.
The RJ and the Sun both reported him as missing a little more than a week ago. I would assume there would be another small article when he is found and since there hasn't been one, he likely hasn't been found. The NPS office on scene said it usually takes a body about two weeks to float.
I went out at Cottonwood this weekend and only went as far north as mm40 and did't see any search effort (and no NPS boat presence). Lots of people enjoying the great weather though.
